The reliable starting point is the Battery Health screen, followed by a controlled observation of how quickly the percentage falls during your normal routine. What an Apple Watch battery test can tell you

A battery test can help you separate normal variation from a problem worth investigating. It is most useful when you record the same details each time: starting percentage, ending percentage, test duration, battery health, workouts, GPS, cellular use, music, notifications, and charging conditions.

A short test cannot prove that a battery is defective. Battery use changes with the features you use, signal conditions, temperature, software, and battery age. Apple describes battery life as the amount of time a device runs before it needs charging, while Maximum Capacity compares the battery with its capacity when new.[2]

Check Apple Watch Battery Health first

On the watch, open Settings, tap Battery, and then tap Battery Health. Look at Maximum Capacity and read any message shown on that screen. Maximum Capacity is not the same as the current battery percentage. A watch can show 100% charge while its Maximum Capacity is below 100%. Maximum Capacity also does not predict exactly how many hours your watch will last, because runtime depends on how the watch is being used.

How to run a repeatable manual battery test

A repeatable test is more useful than checking the percentage at random times. The following method is simple enough for home use and does not require opening the watch or installing diagnostic software.

  1. Record the condition. Note the Apple Watch model, watchOS version if known, Maximum Capacity, and whether the watch is paired with the iPhone nearby.
  2. Choose a fixed observation period. A four-hour period is long enough to reduce the effect of one brief percentage change. A full normal day can provide more context if you can keep the routine reasonably consistent.
  3. Record the starting percentage and time. Write down whether the watch is being used for a workout, GPS navigation, music, calls, or cellular data.
  4. Use the watch normally for that period. Do not repeatedly wake the screen just to watch the percentage. Note unusual events such as a long workout, weak cellular coverage, hot weather, or a software update.
  5. Record the ending percentage and time. Use the same observation length when you repeat the test.
  6. Compare repeated observations. A result that is consistently much worse than your earlier baseline is more useful than one unusually high or low reading.

How to calculate battery drain per hour

Subtract the ending percentage from the starting percentage, then divide by the number of hours observed. For example, a drop from 86% to 70% over four hours is a 16-point drop, or about 4 percentage points per hour. That number describes the chosen routine; it is not a universal Apple Watch battery rating.

Why charging behavior matters, but does not prove failure


Charging speed can change because of the charger, cable, power source, and temperature. Apple says Apple Watch charges fastest with the appropriate USB-C Power Delivery charger and compatible charging cable, and that extreme temperatures can reduce charging speed to protect the battery.[4] A slow charge by itself is therefore not enough to diagnose a failing battery.

If you compare charging, record the charger, cable, starting percentage, ending percentage, room conditions, and whether the watch displayed a slow-charger message. Do not compare a dedicated charger with a computer port or an overloaded USB hub as though they were the same setup.

When an Apple Watch battery test suggests further help

Contact Apple Support if Battery Health displays Battery Needs Service, the watch repeatedly shuts down unexpectedly, or the runtime has become unacceptable after you have checked normal usage factors. If the watch is hot, swollen, physically damaged, or smells unusual, stop using and charging it and seek professional service. Do not puncture, open, or attempt to replace the battery yourself.
